A Seamstress' Cutting Table

My wife Alisha is a seamstress of incredible talent. Many times I have watched her as she practices her craft. She  finds the pattern for what she wants to make, selects the fabric and then she lays out the pattern with the fabric to cut. This is where I decided to make her a cutting table. The fact that patterns need to be laid out on a rather large space so that every piece can be pinned and cut makes it difficult to do on the dining room table. Since Alisha is so good to me I figured this was the least I could do for her! I would feel bad about how sore her back would get because of being bent over the table for hours carefully cutting the fabric. So, I designed a table. The dimensions are 72" long x 36" wide x 38.5" tall. I made 2 folding wings so when space is not needed they can be folded down to reduce the length to 48". Being married to a seamstress means lots of fabric and sewing machines. With this in mind I made two lower levels. The bottom level is separated into 6 separate spaces for Alisha's sewing machines. The upper level is divided into 2 large spaces for fabric storage. I have a few pictures  to show some of the rough work as it is proceeding. Hope everyone likes it. Once it is done I will post the finished photos.

The beginning of a new chapter!

I have always had an affinity for wood working and making furniture. My grandfather immigrated to the US from Germany back in the 20s.  He had been a furniture maker back in the old country and even though he moved away from his vocation when he came to America he always had a special love for working with wood. Some of my favorite childhood memories are the times when I would spend hours with my grandfather in his wood shop learning how to make furniture. Papa as I called him had a beautiful farm in the Catskill mountains in New York. Not only would I spend hours with him working in the shop, but we would go for walks amongst the mountains where he would teach me about nature and trees and how to tell which trees would yield good lumber to work with. It is in memory of my grandfather and in starting my own wood shop that I am starting this blog. The first project that I will be making is a cutting table I have designed for my gorgeous wife Alisha. Alisha is an incredibly talented seamstress and in our home she has her dream studio. My furniture designs will be for her sewing studio and for my recording studio. So, my next post will be the initial specifics of Alisha's cutting table. Until then, have a great one!
